What happens when…
Two artists share one canvas? A bit of chaos, a lot of laughter, and something totally unexpected.
Torrell Arnold and Kathleen Farrell have been collaborating since 2010, when they first teamed up for Couch Potato Beach as part of Rochester’s Beaches on Parade. That project sparked a creative connection built on shared humor, spontaneity, and a love of drawing people in action.
Their most recent collaboration began last fall at Monroe Community College’s Mercer Gallery. As alumni, they were invited to exhibit their individual work—then something unusual happened: the gallery gifted them a giant 7x7 foot canvas. Without hesitation, they dove in, co-creating a vivid carnival scene that reflects their mutual fascination with public spaces and the universal joy of a crowd. That piece was later accepted into the 69th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition at the Memorial Art Gallery and will eventually return to the Mercer Gallery’s permanent collection.
“At its heart, their work together is about experimentation, connection, and joy. It's what happens when two imaginations meet, push boundaries, and let the paint fly.”
This current show “Marvelous, Mischievous, Tomfoolery” at Lumiere on view from September 5, 2025 - September 27, 2025 has given the duo a chance to collaborate once again this time on a playful new series. Over the summer, they met regularly to create thirteen 2x2 foot paintings exploring high-energy, whimsical scenes: from roller rinks and dog parks to disco ballrooms, haunted parties, and miniature golf.
